Today is World Wide Web Day!

Where would we be without the internet?  While there are certainly downsides to all that connectivity – like finding how just how racist that one uncle really is – it’s hard to deny all the good that has come from the worldwide exchange of ideas we have all come to take for granted.

The internet as we know it was invented in 1989 in Switzerland by a British scientist Tim Berners-Lee (insert your own Al Gore joke here).  He realized that being able to share knowledge quickly with researchers all over the globe was crucial to the advancement of science and exploration.  Internet usage by private folks took off the mid 90’s and the rest is history.

I’m sure Tim had no idea how much his idea would change the world.  Of course, he also had no idea how much time folks would spend on cat memes, videos of guys getting hit the crotch with everything imaginable, or spam emails.  So I guess you could say it’s been a mixed bag.  But one we couldn’t live without nevertheless.
